If your pet is having a surgical or diagnostic procedure performed, we sometimes use a local anesthetic to help control pain. Local anesthetics are frequently used during dental procedures, especially when teeth need to be extracted. Local anesthetics cause a loss of sensation in the area where the procedure is being performed. The also continue to provide pain control for 4 – 10 hours after being administered, depending on which medication is chosen. They can be used on their own, or in combination with sedation or general anesthesia.
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about your pet receiving local anesthesia, or about the procedure for which your pet is scheduled.
