Can I give my pets human medications?

To keep your pets safe, you should never give them human medications unless they are prescribed your veterinarian. Common human pain medications can be especially toxic.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Percoset) causes damage to the liver and red blood cells. It is especially toxic in cats – even half a tablet can be fatal. Aspirin causes gastrointestinal upsets, and can reduce the blood’s ability to clot. Cats metabolize aspirin much more slowly than dogs and humans, so it’s very easy to overdose them. Ibuprofen is very toxic to your pets. Even at small doses it can cause stomach ulcers and kidney damage. At higher doses it can cause tremors and seizures, and even result in coma and death.

By only using medications and dosages prescribed by your veterinarian, you can ensure that you treat your pet safely and effectively.
